The local economy
ITMA is a non-profit cultural organisation with charitable status. Both through the launch and promotion of the publication, the primary activity with the book took place in Dublin 2. Designers were based in Dublin 2, ITMA based in Dublin 2 while the book was printed in Co. Kerry. All funds generated from sales go directly to the Irish Traditional Music Archive.
Volunteering, jobs & education
Publication has generated further research interest in the subject matter particularly at third level. It has also generated further interest in the collection of materials relating to Tommie Potts, with new recordings being submitted to the Archive by Volunteers.
Arts, culture & heritage
The cultural impact of the publication is summed up well in two of the reviews of the book. Writing in the Irish Examiner, Colm O’Callaghan commented on The Sorrowful and the Great: “It does that most rare of things: it brings to life, on the printed page, exactly how Tommie Potts felt the music that so defines him. And why.” Siobhan Long, in the Irish Times, remarked: “It casts an eye over the undeniable depth and breadth of Potts, the man and the musician. Stylistically clear, it is drenched with the richest of musical insights and is a welcome meditation on Potts and the indelible mark he has left on the tradition.”
Activity, health and leisure
As a cultural project, this publication will enrich the understanding and appreciation of a unique and important traditional artist from Dublin.
