The idea
Together in Batley is completely volunteer-led and the paper is free
We highlight the best of Batley, sharing inspiring stories and achievements.
The newspaper helps fight isolation, providing an accessible format with larger font sizes, simple language, and visuals for those who struggle with reading or English as a second language.
We connect people to essential services, support groups, and local businesses.
What we'll deliver
- 1000 printed magazine every two months filled with news and happenings in Batley
- Ability to view the magazine online
- Support local volunteering groups and advertising their events
Why it's a great idea
It’s a connection to their community, a source of positivity, and a way to stay informed about local events and services. We know Together in Batley makes a difference. A nurse recently told us how one of her patients used the paper to find an activity he loved, and an elderly man, who had never been able to read, was able to engage with our stories because they were written in his voice. These are the connections that keep our community strong, and we don’t want to lose them. It also supports local voluntary groups and their events and it spreads the word about the Kirklees support network. It makes people happy as it is all Good news!
Steps to get it done
- 1000 copies in april
- 10000 in june
Our much-loved community newspaper, Together in Batley, has run out of funding. But we’re not giving up—we believe in the power of good news and the importance of keeping our community connected. Our printed editions are brilliant for those who may not be online or who feel isolated. These copies go directly to places like the foodbank, Batley Library, the Salvation Army, community centres, and sheltered housing. For many, Together in Batley is more than just a newspaper—it’s a connection to their community, a source of positivity, and a way to stay informed about local events and services.
We want to continue printing 1,000 copies every two months, but each edition costs £950 to produce.
We’ve already published 18 editions, and we don’t want to stop now! Our volunteers work hard to make this a reality, from writing and proofreading to delivering copies.
