The idea
The Way will create a Sensory Room that will benefits for young people and adults who have learning difficulties, sensory impairments and developmental disabilities. The room will be a safe environment where users can build their confidence and increase their ability. They will learn to interact with the world around them. The state-of-the-art equipment will allow them to explore and develop at their own pace and allow their carer to assess what rouses them and/or calms them. The benefits:
-Improved balance, movement and special awareness by developing fine motor skills and visual processing;
-Sensory stimulation. Exploring the environment increases ability to react and interact.
-Tackling behavioural problems by providing moments of calm and comfort for distressed individuals. This improves focus reducing the need to misbehave.
What we'll deliver
- Provide a Sensory Room for children and adults
- Provide a Health & Wellbeing room for young people
Why it's a great idea
First class sensory rooms are very limited in Wolverhampton. Sometimes, such facilities are housed in Hospitals or specialist medical centres. Our city centre venue is easily accessible and set in a building designed primarily around the needs of young people but welcoming to people of all ages during the daytime. We believe children with additional needs should not be expected to visit somewhere away from where their peers socialise and have fun. We see time spent in a Sensory Room as fun, educational or development. When they have completed a sensory session, they will be able to join in with other activities at The Way or simply enjoy being with other young people in a friendly, safe place with experienced youth workers. The room will be used by young people during our youth club sessions and will be made available for use during the day for NHS patients and referrals. It will benefit adults who may have brain injuries or have suffered strokes.
Steps to get it done
- After 12 months of the Sensory being opened, 200 young people will have benefitted from the Sensory Room
