EVERY FAMILY HAS ITS SECRETS THE MADDOCK FAMILY HAS MORE THAN MOST SOON - THERE WILL BE NO SECRETS SOON - THERE WILL BE NO FAMILY A fast moving, hard-hitting play that pulls no punches. Tense drama and black humour fuse to present a powerful story of one family’s refusal to confront the knot of secrecy that is slowly choking it to death...leading to the explosive confrontation that will finally unravel “THE KNOT Whilst drugs and alcohol do not cause domestic abuse - Studies show, there is a link between domestic abuse and alcohol/drug use, which can make pre-existing violence and abuse more severe. We also know that alcohol and drugs can be used as a coping mechanism by victim/survivors. Between April 2022 and March 2023, 93 of the domestic abuse-related deaths recorded were suspected suicides. Our original drama highlights that we need to understand how other forms of harm, such as drugs, interlink with domestic abuse & how this can help improve protection and support for survivors

What we'll deliver:

  • Create a film of the original drama The Knot
  • Deliver 15 community screenings of the film
  • Create an immersive sound version of the film for people who are blind or visually impaired
  • Deliver 15 discussion workshops exploring the film's themes
  • Create an accredited training package
  • Create a version of the film with Subtitles

Why it's a great idea:

The Knot explores critical issues affecting Lancashire, including domestic abuse, substance misuse & male suicide. Portraying these challenges, raises awareness, fosters empathy & encourages open discussions, leading to early intervention/support. Young Men at Risk of Suicide: Lancashire's suicide rate is above the national average, with males making up over three-quarters of these deaths. The film seeks to destigmatise mental health issues & promote seeking help. Female Victims of Domestic Abuse: 4 in 5 domestic abuse victims in Lancashire are female. The film validates experiences, encourages reporting & connects survivors to support services. Young People: 70% of high-risk domestic abuse victims have children, who face mental health, social& educational challenges. The film raises awareness and promotes intervention. Those affected by Substance Abuse: Preston saw 9 drug misuse deaths last year. The film educates viewers, reduces stigma & supports those struggling with addiction

Steps to get it done:

  • Pre-Production & Planning Completion
  • Venues Booked
  • Casting and Rehearsals
  • Filming
  • Post-Production & Editing
  • Premiere Screening Launch
  • Community screenings/workshops
  • Impact Evaluation & Community Engagement Report

The Knot fosters a more informed, compassionate community, driving proactive engagement with these issues. It also connects communities to professional arts in an informal and engaging way - taking original drama direct to accessible venues and spaces. Using the creative arts to break down barriers to seeking help. The film explores three different perspectives on dealing with the sensitive issues they are experience and the fear that can often be felt in speaking out. Linking with local agencies we will explore the options available across Lancashire and within our individual communities.
