The idea
The festival aims to create a cultural dialogue between the North West England and the world and inspire local audiences with great films, thoughtful conversations, and joyful encounters. This is a rare opportunity for local people to experience stories through the medium of independent films which traditionally get limited cinema releases. We believe that our film festival will have a positive impact on our community.
The programme is comprised of:
- Stanley Kubrick’s films retrospective (plus an exhibition of previously unseen photographs which should garner world attention and honourable guest - Kubrick's producer Jan Harlan)
- Regional and international independent feature film screenings with opportunities to meet filmmakers at Q&A sessions
- Screening and awarding the best visually captivating and thought-provoking short films from around the world (submissions from over 50 countries)
- Film Forum “Screen stories in the modern world”
- Film club to critique and discuss films.
What we'll deliver
- We will run the film festival throughout October 2023 (30+ screenings and events)
- We will organise 3 free entry events with film discussions and short film screenings
- We will run a photo exhibition of "Morecambe Bay" for local photographers

- We will make 20 sustainable Award trophies in partnership with Relic Plastic
- We will run a photo competition for the "Best Morecambe Bay" photo

- We will organise 3 free an 3 ticketed screenings of international short films
Why it's a great idea
The Film Festival will benefit the Morecambe community:
1. Exploring a diverse range of stories from different cultures and backgrounds can broaden perspectives, inspire creativity, and foster a deeper appreciation for the cinematic arts.
2. Various events will encourage community members to come together, share their opinions, and connect with one another. This will promote social cohesion, strengthen community bonds, and create a sense of pride and belonging among the residents.
3. Influx of tourists can have a positive impact on the local economy by increasing tourism revenue and supporting local businesses.
4. As a hosting town, Morecambe can position itself as a cultural destination, attract attention from filmmakers, artists, and creative professionals and help the development of Morecambe's arts and entertainment scene.
5. The festival's events can provide valuable insights into the industry, and foster the growth of film-related knowledge and skills within the local community.
Steps to get it done
- Raising core funds for the festival (July-August)
- Marketing and advertising of the event (September-October)
- Running the festival (October)
- Evaluation processes (November-December)
GOOD TO KNOW THAT…
…the festival organisers understand that the current cost of living crisis may prevent some local residents from attending the festival screenings. Therefore, we aim to assist those with low incomes, who may not prioritise cinema, in attending the screenings without straining their family budgets. We will offer three free access open to the general public events at the West End Playhouse, which will feature short film programs, along with tea, coffee, refreshments, and film club discussions.
…as part of this crowdfunding campaign, we are raising funds for 100 free tickets, catering to those who cannot afford to purchase them. We encourage our future backers to "pay it forward" by buying an extra ticket for someone who is unable to do so.
…the 20 first backers who will contribute £75+ to the campaign will not only support the festival but also get an incentive – Golden Ticket to 30+ festival events throughout October!
