Caring For The Carer

We want to offer unpaid family carers the opportunity to help and support their mental health during this pandemic, by joining us for a series of virtual training sessions.

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

The idea

The virtual training sessions came from the carers showing a demand for them, after we have seen an increased contact of over 500 carers across 8 weeks. The need is for training that will support carers to carry on their caring role and improve their mental health at this time. Carers are facing a lonely and uncertain time, with all the caring responsibilities landing on their shoulders. For many it is 24/7 with no break, which can lead to isolation and discrimination.

We want to find a way to reach out and support them. No one should feel lonely, scared and unable to cope.

The sessions will be interactive and carer driven, including first aid, carers rights, moving and handling, planning for an emergency, relaxation, as well as one to one sessions which can include benefit checks. Within all of the sessions there will be a sense of community and being cared about. This may all sound very serious, and it is, but we’ll bring humour in, because laughter is the best therapy

What we'll deliver

  • We will run 12 sessions
  • Each session is for approximately 18 carers

Why it's a great idea

The benefits will include
1. Reduced isolation and having a sense of belonging and not being the only one
2. Decrease of stress and worry
3. Improved knowledge and understanding on what they can and cannot do
4. A sense of self worth, self confidence and self esteem
5. Improved mental health
6. An ability to carry on caring, which will take some strain off the health and social care system
7. Feeling less discriminated against from other services, and they have found the support they need

Steps to get it done

  • We’ll purchase the tablets and cases
  • Set a plan on when we want to deliver the sessions and book the workers
  • Start publicity
  • Book carers on the sessions
  • Run the sessions and evaluate them
