The Old Bath Community House
This registered community building has fallen into disuse. We aim to equip & repair the community kitchen as the 1st step to restoring this historical building to benefit local communities and beyond.
About the Project Creator
The Hackney Chinese Community Services (HCCS) is the lead partner in this community kitchen project. HCCS is a registered charity based in Hackney. It has been running for over 30 years servicing the Chinese and Vietnamese community and supporting their integration in British Society. We believe that raising civic awareness and enhancing employability encourages confidence. It helps individuals to contribute fully in society, increasing community interaction and cohesiveness.
We are partnering with Bahay Kubo Housing Association (BKHA). BKHA is the lead organisation in the Kanlungan Filipino Consortium, which is also a registered charity, of a similar philosophy and vision. Our ambition is to establish the Bath House as a multipurpose community centre for advice and support, education and training, business development and workshops, arts and culture that serve and promote East Asian communities and beyond. In Hackney, the “Other Asian” population grew by 308% in the last census, our joint vision is shared and supported by the Hackney Council.
Food is central to South and East Asian culture and we believe that sharing good food brings people together, forms connections and reduces isolation. In the first year of the community kitchen, we will run workshops on East Asian cuisine, organise cookery classes, and hold pop up restaurants that explore diverse Filipino, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines.
Incomes from the community kitchen will be used to invest into the building to eventually bring the whole building back to use. We have a programme to fully utilise the building to benefit both our members and our wider neighbourhood.
