More about our impact

More about our impact

The environment

The environment

The Oaks Oasis has made a significant positive impact on the environment by transforming previously underused school grounds into a thriving, biodiverse ecosystem. - **The Wildflower Meadow** has enhanced local biodiversity by attracting vital pollinators such as bees and butterflies, while also improving soil health through deep-rooted species. It contributes to carbon sequestration, helping to absorb CO₂ and combat climate change. - **Tree Planting** plays a key role in long-term carbon storage, oxygen production, and the creation of essential wildlife habitats. These trees also help filter pollutants from the air and manage water by reducing runoff and recharging groundwater sources. - **Our Wildlife Pond** supports a variety of aquatic species, adding a vital wetland habitat to the site. The pond acts as a natural water filter and helps regulate the microclimate by adding humidity and a cooling effect in warmer months. - **Mintopia Planting Areas** have introduced specialist mint species that not only increase plant diversity but also support a wide range of pollinators, further strengthening the local ecosystem. - **The Allotment Area** contributes to sustainable land use and environmental stewardship. Through composting and crop rotation, soil fertility is maintained, while pupils and volunteers develop a deeper understanding of eco-friendly food production. Together, these features create a resilient, sustainable outdoor space that promotes biodiversity, improves soil and water quality, and contributes to the fight against climate change. The Oasis is not only a beautiful green sanctuary but also an educational tool that models real-world environmental responsibility.

The local economy

The local economy

While the primary aim of The Oaks Oasis was environmental and educational, the project has also supported the local economy in several indirect ways: Use of Local Suppliers and Services: Wherever possible, we sourced materials, plants, and equipment from local businesses and nurseries, helping to support jobs and economic activity in the area. Engagement of Local Contractors: Small landscaping and fencing tasks were carried out by local tradespeople, providing short-term work opportunities during the implementation phase. Increased Volunteer Activity: By encouraging volunteering and community involvement, the project has built skills and confidence among participants, potentially opening up pathways to employment, training, or further education in areas like gardening, sustainability, and outdoor education. Creating a More Attractive Community Asset: The enhanced school grounds are now a welcoming and inspiring space. Over time, this can contribute to the wider perception of the local area as a greener, more vibrant place to live and learn, which can support community pride and longer-term investment in local initiatives. Although the economic impact is not large-scale, The Oaks Oasis has quietly contributed to local resilience by circulating funding locally, building skills, and creating a space that adds social value to the community.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering: The project inspired strong community involvement from the outset. Parents, carers, local residents, and even local businesses offered their time and expertise to help plant, build, and maintain the space. This has fostered a lasting sense of ownership, with ongoing volunteer sessions continuing to support the upkeep and development of the Oasis. Education: The Oasis has transformed how we teach at The Oaks Primary School. Pupils now regularly use the outdoor classroom spaces to explore science, ecology, sustainability, and mindfulness through hands-on, experiential learning. Topics such as biodiversity, climate change, and food growing are brought to life in ways that engage and empower children across the curriculum. Skills Development: Children and volunteers alike are learning practical skills in gardening, composting, plant identification, and habitat management. These experiences are helping build environmental literacy and resilience, as well as confidence, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of the natural world. Pathways to Jobs and Further Learning: While the project did not directly create employment, it has opened up conversations about green careers, conservation, and land-based industries. It has also introduced young people and adults to new interests that may lead to future training or job opportunities in environmental or educational fields. Overall, the project has laid the foundations for lifelong learning, civic engagement, and environmental stewardship, enriching the school and wider community in lasting ways.

Arts, culture & heritage

Arts, culture & heritage

While The Oaks Oasis is primarily an environmental and educational project, it has naturally supported arts, culture, and heritage by creating a space where creativity and connection to nature can thrive: Creative Expression in Nature: The outdoor space has inspired a range of pupil-led creative activities, including nature-based art projects, storytelling, and seasonal crafts using natural and recycled materials. These have allowed children to express themselves while building a connection to the local environment. Cultural Events and Celebrations: The Oasis has become a setting for school-wide celebrations tied to seasonal change and environmental awareness, such as Earth Day, Harvest, and nature-themed assemblies. These events bring together traditional values, cultural storytelling, and shared community experiences. Eco-Art and Displays: Some elements of the project incorporated eco-friendly artistic features, such as signs and decorations made from repurposed materials. These help to raise awareness about sustainability while beautifying the space and encouraging artistic collaboration. Connecting with Local Heritage: Through planting native species and identifying local wildlife, pupils have explored the natural heritage of Ellesmere Port and the broader Cheshire area, learning about local ecosystems and how these have shaped the region over time. By blending creativity, environmental learning, and cultural storytelling, The Oaks Oasis has become a place where arts, nature, and community identity come together.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

The Oaks Oasis was designed to support the physical and mental well-being of pupils, staff, and the wider community—and it’s already having a real impact: Physical Activity: The outdoor space encourages active learning, gardening, exploring, and nature-based play. Pupils move more during their day, engaging in tasks like digging, planting, and maintaining the space—developing motor skills and improving physical fitness. Mental Health & Well-being: The natural setting provides calm, reflective areas that support mindfulness and emotional regulation. The firepit area and shaded canopy offer safe, welcoming zones for quiet time, storytelling, and group reflection. Leisure and Recreation: The Oasis has become a valued space for both structured learning and unstructured leisure. Pupils enjoy free time in a stimulating, natural environment, while families and volunteers use the area for relaxed social engagement and outdoor events. Community Connection: Workshops and open days have brought together parents, carers, and residents, creating positive social experiences and encouraging time spent outdoors. Lifelong Healthy Habits: By embedding outdoor learning and environmental stewardship into everyday life, the project helps build healthy habits from an early age—encouraging time in nature, sustainability, and care for well-being. The Oaks Oasis has become more than a garden—it’s a green sanctuary that nurtures activity, relaxation, and positive mental health for the whole school community.
