The access to more and better equipment and instruments that this project enabled has given more children and young people the chance to learn an instrument, and provided access to a wider range of instruments. As well as extra equipment such as music stands and bows, ten new instruments were purchased with funding from Westway/SpaceHive. More children will be playing the clarinet, euphonium, cornet, cello and bassoon thanks to this funding: making for more diverse ensembles and a greater range of possible repertoire.

Ten new instruments purchased with this funding means ten new places at Nucleo, helping us grow the project. Many of the children and young people we work with would not have the opportunity to learn an instrument without a free programme like ours: we really are widening access to the arts amongst less privileged children and hopefully sparking a passion for music that will last a lifetime.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

We know that financial disadvantage often equals social exclusion: this is one of the reasons that the Nucleo Project provides a free programme. We cannot offer places to children without the instruments and equipment they need, even if we have the capacity to take more of them in our music groups, which is why this project was key. New instruments have enabled us to extend music making as a leisure opportunity to a further 10 children. Buying three new bows has also helped to extend our reach, as we had spare violins we could not use without them. The largest chunk of funding was spent on 48 new music stands, which are being used in all of our 7+ music groups and also our improvers' group for 4-7-year-olds.
