The founder Chrissie Lowery set up the Safe Space initiative in August 2022 following a spate of rapes, attacks, lewd incidents and general safety for women in Stroud.
The second rape was located in Dudbridge and the team reclaimed the tunnel where the crime happened and brought the community together. We then approached local businesses for both the daytime and nighttinme economies to set up the scheme. To date we have over 600 Safe Spaces to include the Stage Coach buses.
In December 2023 Chrissie lauched The NIght Angels patrols, which happen every weekend and also for local events. The Angels are highly trianed individuals that are also DBS checked. The Angels are volunteers and we have approximately 70. They go through a robust training programme and are reviewed throughout the year. We provide high visabilty jackets, coats, hoodies, t-shirts, beanies and refreshments during our duties.
Since lauching we have attended to 165 incidents which include giving vulnerable women transport, first aid, mental first aid, hydration, reassurance, clothes, shoes, period products, food gift cards, defib, charging phones, liaise with families, domestic violence situations, drugs, anti-spiking and we also first aid to any gender.
In the future we would like an app, that will help women find an Angel, offer safety advice, find safe spaces, buses, provide a Safe Haven and to widen our areas of patrol with a Night Angel car.
We collobarate and partner with local councils and councillors, police, the crime commisioner, city safe, night safe officers, trainers and the public.
We would like to introduce a safety programme to be deilvered to schools, colleges and universities.
