The idea
The Climate Changing Room will
support people in adapting to climate and environmental change. It will provide:
- Up-to-date and balanced information about the impact of climate change;
- A global perspective on responses to climate and environmental damage;
- Guidance on sustainable adaptations for a changing climate;
- Signposting to emerging opportunities for study and occupational choices.
The project ethos will be one of helping people feel part of the collective response to
the challenges of a climate changing world; and of generating hope to motivate
individual and community action.
We have been granted planning permission for a new building will provide a flexible space for information and displays in relation to climate and environmental change, run by trained volunteers. A programme of events in support of the project aims will be delivered by a range of organisations. We are seeking funding towards the construction of this building which will be the home of the project.
What we'll deliver
- A new building which demonstrates good practice in sustainable construction and energy management.
- A community space providing up to date information on our changing climate.
- Space and equipment for running courses/conferences etc
Why it's a great idea
Concerns about climate change were shared at the Annual General Meetings of the Trust in 2021 and 2022. Discussions with Trustees, Volunteers and the Torrington community indicated that it would be appropriate for the Trust to make climate change an ongoing strand of its work and that it would be consistent with our charitable objectives. The project proposal has led to to offers of practical help from Natural England, the Woodlands Trust, RHS Rosemoor and Great Torrington School. We have an
agreement with the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Partnershipto promote their conservation and
research work from the new building. We have
agreed to promote the environmental management, ecology and conservation programmes offered by Petroc University College and to provide study and work experience opportunities for their students. In return, it is agreed that we shall invite members of both organisations to contribute to the project by way of talks, workshops and other events.
Steps to get it done
- Take down the existing pole barn and reuse materials where possible
- Begin construction of the new building
- Set up a community event to provide updates on building progress
- Plan the interior layout of the building including creating information database for use by the local community
- Once construction is completed, install equipment and create displays for the interior
- Plan the grand opening!
Our plans and organisational links will provide a wide variety of opportunities for our local community to engage with activities and information about our changing climate and how to adapt to these changes.
