We will transform the currently derelict former public toilet in Brunswick Park into a non-profit, communal art space called The Bower. We will host a series of exhibitions and events and produce books with artists and writers by Publication Studio London on site. The programme will have a socially engaged approach and respond to the context of this unique property and it's locality. In addition to this, The Bower will provide a much needed cafe service to the park, serving freshly made coffee, tea and refreshments, all from local suppliers. We have collaborated with architects Claire and Kazuya Nakamoto on the interior designs of the building.
The Bower takes its name from the definitions: A pleasant shady place under trees or climbing plants in a garden or wood, a woman's private room, an attractive dwelling or retreat.
Your contribution, however small, will help us to realise this project and turn the building into a multi-functional art space for the whole community.
What we'll deliver:
- Renovate the building - replace windows, doors
- Redesign the interior, transforming it into a multifunctional art space
- Reconnect the electricity & water supply
Why it's a great idea:
The community will benefit from exhibitions and accompanying events and performances in their local park. All exhibitions will be free and open to the public.
Our publishing studio, Publication Studio London, will produce affordable publications made with artists. The publications seek to benefit the public rather than the market, and encourage dialogue and engagement with artistic and literary work. Publications give the community something to take away with them - the art experience does not end in the gallery.
Our cafe will bring a much needed social space to the park. The hosting of the cafe within an art space brings the community together. All profits from the cafe go back into running the art programme. This hospitality will create a relaxed and non-exclusive communal space for visitors to engage with contemporary art.
Artists and art graduates can volunteer and work with us so that they can receive professional support & training.
