More about our impact
The environment
While primarily a creative and community-focused initiative, The Boat Shed also supported environmental awareness and sustainability. Events and exhibitions frequently featured work created from recycled, repurposed, or locally sourced materials, with many artists using their platforms to explore themes of climate and conservation. In addition, The Boat Shed’s location—directly opposite the town’s central bus station—meant that it was highly accessible via public transport. This not only reduced reliance on cars but made attendance easier for those without private transport, promoting more inclusive and environmentally friendly participation in the arts. Where possible, the venue encouraged walking, cycling, and car-sharing as part of its wider commitment to sustainability.
The local economy
The Boat Shed made a meaningful contribution to the local economy by generating opportunities for employment, freelance work, and local spending. The project supported artists, technicians, facilitators, and performers—many of whom live locally—by paying fair fees for their creative services. Events regularly drew in audiences from across the region, increasing footfall in the town centre and benefiting nearby cafés, shops, and transport providers. Pop-up exhibitions and performances also created opportunities for local makers and businesses to showcase or sell their work, stimulating microeconomic activity. As a cultural hub, The Boat Shed helped raise the profile of Ellesmere Port as a creative destination, encouraging investment in the area and highlighting the value of arts-led regeneration.
Volunteering, jobs & education
The Boat Shed provided a vital platform for skills development, volunteering, and employment in the creative arts. The project engaged a wide range of volunteers—many of whom were young people or adults looking to gain experience in the arts, events management, or technical production. These volunteers received hands-on training and mentorship, developing valuable skills that have since supported them into further education, freelance work, or paid employment. The venue also created job opportunities for local artists, facilitators, and technicians by commissioning workshops, performances, and events. For many, it served as a stepping stone into sustainable creative careers. In addition, The Boat Shed ran or hosted informal learning opportunities—such as creative workshops, community rehearsals, and skill-sharing sessions—that offered accessible pathways into arts education and personal development for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Arts, culture & heritage
The Boat Shed played a vital role in enriching the cultural life of Ellesmere Port by providing a dynamic space where creativity, heritage, and community intersected. It offered a year-round programme of live theatre, music, comedy, and visual art that celebrated both contemporary voices and cultural traditions. The Boaty Theatre Company, based at the venue, continued its mission to make high-quality theatre accessible to all—often drawing on classical texts, historical themes, and local stories to engage new audiences. By showcasing local artists and collaborating with community groups, the project helped preserve and promote the area's creative heritage, while supporting the growth of a new generation of makers and performers. Pop-up exhibitions frequently explored themes connected to identity, place, and shared experience, sparking intergenerational dialogue and community pride. In doing so, The Boat Shed strengthened the cultural identity of the town and positioned the arts as a central part of its future. A future that was sadly cut short.
Activity, health and leisure
The Boat Shed offered a welcoming space where people could engage in creative activities that supported both mental and physical wellbeing. Participation in theatre rehearsals, movement-based workshops, and community-led arts sessions provided regular opportunities for gentle physical activity, self-expression, and social connection. For many, especially those experiencing isolation, anxiety, or low confidence, the space became a vital outlet for emotional wellbeing and creative exploration. Events at The Boat Shed also encouraged people to get out, connect with others, and take part in enjoyable leisure activities—ranging from comedy nights and live music to hands-on art sessions and performances. These moments of joy, creativity, and shared experience played a key role in boosting community morale and individual wellbeing, particularly during the recovery period after COVID-19 lockdowns.
