The idea

The Barn Bus is a creative wellbeing programme run by the Barn Theatre in Cirencester.

It will provide safe, accessible transport from local rural areas to the theatre, enabling older residents to attend live performances as part of an organised supported group.

The service is a holistic intervention that combines mobility, social connection, cultural engagement and community belonging.

The Cotswolds district has one of the oldest population profiles in the country, with sustained growth in residents aged 65+, 75+ and 85+.

For older people, ageing in a rural setting brings progressive isolation, many stop driving due to ill health and lack of confidence, consequently losing independence and access to everyday social life.

With a local coach company (Ellisons Coaches based in Ashton Keynes) the Barn aim to address the chronic issue of transport and help deliver a long-term solution to the massive social challenge faced by older people in the Cotswolds.

What we'll deliver

  • Twelve months delivering community connection for older residents in the Cotswolds to live theatre in Cirencester.
  • At least 20 fully delivered community wellbeing journeys serving priority rural villages in the Cotswolds.
  • Opportunity for up to 600 older people to use the service (30 places available per trip).
  • Inclusive participation ensuring older people experiencing hardship are supported.
  • Impact monitoring and evaluation reporting to evidence the benefits and deliverables.

Why it's a great idea

Cognitive Health - engagement with arts and culture stimulates memory, creativity, and emotional expression. Regular attendance at arts events is linked to slower rates of cognitive decline, particularly in memory and attention.
Mental Health - arts activities reduce stress hormones, improve mood, and enhance resilience against depression. Arts participation increases life satisfaction and reduces anxiety across older populations. Attending theatre creates a shared emotional experience, reinforcing empathy and belonging.
Social Connection - shared cultural experiences foster friendships, strengthen community bonds, and reduce feelings of invisibility. Group activities combat the “shrinking world” effect where older people restrict their social contact.
Physical Health - people engaged in regular cultural activities are more likely to stay physically active and independent. Arts engagement has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and improve immune function.
