The idea
Since 1972, Tetbury has hosted the world famous Woolsack Races. A test of strength, where individuals and teams compete to run up and down the 1 in 4 gradient of Gumstool Hill with heavy woolsacks on their back.
Steeped in tradition, the event dates back to the 17th century where drovers ran from pub to pub with a woolsack on their shoulders to impress local women. Over the years the event has evolved, to contain numerous races, stalls, and entertainment. Traditionally held on the May long weekend, allowing visitors to come to Tetbury to compete, or enjoy the spectacle on the day.
Unfortunately due to COVID, the event was put on hold, and the committee disbanded. In 2023, a new committee was formed with the plan to bring back the race in 2024. The theme of the event is a Celebration of the Cotswolds, highlighting the history of the event, and showcasing local food, drink, businesses and entertainment.
We are looking for funding to help setup and raise capital for the event in 2024.

Why it's a great idea
Tetbury Woolsack Races has been at the heart of the community and the traditions in the local area since the 1970s. Its absence due to COVID, has left a hole in the community calendar, that helps bring spectators and participants to the Cotswolds from around the country, and internationally.
We are eager to bring back the Woolsack Races to build a greater sense of community, attract tourism to our Cotswold town, and raise much needed funds for the Tetbury community. Our event is focused on Celebrating the Cotswolds, where we are aiming for all stall holders to be from or representing the Cotswolds. We will provide entertainment and shopping opportunities for families, locals and tourists to enjoy.
The race itself is a test of strength, promoting healthy activity and fitness. We excited to bring this event back to the Cotswolds, and put Tetbury back on the map.
