The idea

In 2024, Disability Positive launched a new social group for adults with lived experience of disability and long-term health conditions living in Tarporley.

Aside from very limited options, disabled people often face many barriers to participation in social activities, such as a lack of appropriate support and issues with transport.

This group addresses a need in the local community for rural social activities which members could attend independently, without the need for a parent or carer present.

Tarporley Social Circle provides members with the opportunity to develop independence, increase self-esteem and confidence, and expand their social networks, forming new friendships in their local community.

The group meet regularly within the local community, and take part in a variety of activities including yoga, canoeing, cookery, pottery and social nights including meals out and trips to the local pub. As the group is user-led, activities are chosen and co-produced with members.

What we'll deliver

  • Run one Tarporley Social Circle session per week for six months

Why it's a great idea

Tarporley Social Circle addresses issues surrounding social and emotional isolation, low self-esteem and confidence by enhancing, improving and enriching the lives of disabled adults by offering a range of exciting and interesting activities in a supportive and engaging environment.

The group provides opportunities to increase social interaction and take part in mutually beneficial peer support activities – reducing feelings of isolation and increasing sense of belonging.

As members are able to attend independently without the need for a parent or carer present, the social group also provides families with a short break from their caring role, enabling them to rest and recharge.

'Our son came back from last week’s trip in the best form we’ve seen him since he left college. Who knew there was a budding archer in the family? Thanks to all of you who made it such a success, this group is making a really positive difference to his life'
Quote from Tarporley Social Group parent
