We would like to provide yoga and tai chi sessions for the members of the Lewisham branch MS society and the members of Parkinson's Lewisham branch. Offering these activities for members of both groups will provide a strong foundation of people to benefit from this opportunity. We will hire an accessible community space and qualified, recommended tai chi and yoga tutors. We would like to provide 6 weeks of yoga and 6 weeks of tai chi. We will evaluate after each 6 week sessions, the impact the activity has had on the members. This will guide our decision making for extending the project. If our respective members report physical and mental benefits from either activity, we will fund raise further to offer regular, ongoing sessions. Tai Chi and yoga, can improve balance, body awareness, strengthening: http://bit.ly/1RCOZ4b both practices can also improve steadiness of gait, relaxation: http://www.apdaparkinson.org/yoga-parkinsons/
What we'll deliver:
- Employ experienced Yoga and Tai Chi tutors
- Organise free weekly Yoga and Tai Chi sessions
- Increase access to sessions through transport support
Why it's a great idea:
Following on from The MS Society Lewisham trialing taster mindfulness and yoga sessions as well as Lewisham's Parkinson's Branch experience of occasional Tai Chi sessions, the need for regular sessions in both disciplines is apparent. Members from Lewisham's Parkinson's Branch have reported improved balance, co-ordination, swallowing and strengthening following Tai Chi sessions. The MS Society have reported physical benefits as well as relaxation and improved well-being following taster yoga sessions. Based on the two organisation's previous partnership work we would like to co-operate in setting up regular sessions and will conduct this as a pilot project for an initial 12 week period to assess the viability of moving towards a long term project. Members from both organisations will be invited to attend the sessions. We will aim to offer support to access transport for those who find this barrier.
Steps to get it done:
- Find affordable and accessible space
- Promote the project positively across both organisation's networks
- Research the most qualified and relevant tutors to employ
