The idea

Disclaimer: The exact number of schools is to be confirmed, hopefully will be a maximum of 25 primary schools

Orienteering - the key to navigating the world around you. To introduce Orienteering into 25 Primary Schools from within 4 Secondary School clusters, and in particular take the sport to schools in the more deprived areas of Swansea who would never have the chance to engage with such a sport.

One key to the sport becoming embedded as part of the school’s timetable and learning is the provision of specially drawn maps of their own school grounds. This will allow the schools to continue to use the maps for their own purposes into the future and to complete the legacy of the project, we will provide teachers with essential skills and training on how to teach orienteering and how to use available resources.

As a club we will also focus on providing the pathway for the children and their families to continue their activity by organising local events.

What we'll deliver

  • Map 13 Primary schools and 4 Secondary schools which do not already have maps
  • Deliver 1 introductory session to 25 Primary schools and 4 Secondary schools
  • Fund 1 teacher to attend Introducing Orienteering Course

Why it's a great idea

The project has the opportunity to impact positively on health and wellbeing of primary school aged children – both able and disabled, boys and girls equally, allowing them to get active, get involved, have fun and learn the skill of navigating the world around them. The legacy of the skills learned by teachers and the resources provided, will enable schools to continue introducing orienteering year upon year, introducing orienteering to each new generation, and providing them with a skill that lasts a lifetime.

Steps to get it done

  • Mapping of school grounds
  • In school sessions delivered
  • Teaches enrolled on Orienteering Course

As a club we will also focus on providing the pathway for the children and their families to continue their activity at the weekends, by organising local events which will incorporate the Swansea Schools League, where pupils will be able to compete and represent their school.
