Orienteering challenges require strategic thinking as map reading encourages problem-solving as you plan routes, make decisions, and overcome obstacles. It engages the mind in critical thinking as you analyze information, make informed decisions. As you complete a course you walk or run and having something to aim for, if it in the next control or running faster to beat a friend, it makes exercise fun and you go a lot further than you thought you ever would. Successfully navigating an orienteering course based on map reading also instills confidence and is a skill that lasts a lifetime.
