The idea
Our outreach teams’ mission is to “engage the unengaged” as many rough sleepers are reluctant to go to services. Outreach goes anywhere rough sleepers are located. Failure to provide this would mean that rough sleepers are likely to remain on the streets. Just giving a person a home does not work.
Our outreach service provides the first line of engagement with rough sleepers. we Support is not time limited, as from our experience, we know for some it will take a significant amount of time until they are ready to address their issues.
Once we have gained someone’s confidence, we develop a support plan . This then enables us to get support for them. If needed we will go with them to appointments, until they are confident to go on their own.
We know that at a county level our outreach project has been very successful, and are looking to provide more coverage in Malvern where issues of homelessness are are often not apparent.
What we'll deliver
- provide outreach support to rough sleepers in the district of Malvern
- work with rough sleepers to access the services they need
- work with rough sleepers to source accommodation
Why it's a great idea
The benefits of this project is that we will work with people experiencing homelessness to work towards securing accommodation. The average life expectancy of a rough sleeper is 47 much younger than the general population. So by working towards accommodating rough sleepers we improve their quality of life, extend life expectancy and reduce the likelihood of physical and mental ill health that occurs when sleeping on the streets.
Everyone has the right to a home, unfortunately some people do not have a home, so we work with people to enable them to fulfil this right.
Rough sleepers can be the victims or perpetrators of crime so there is a benefit to the wider population of working towards ending rough sleeping in Malvern
Steps to get it done
- Rough sleepers are accommodated
Rough sleeping impacts on the economy, people are less likely to visit if there is a lot of visible rough sleeping in the area.
Once a person is accommodated they can live fulfilling lives, and can then either volunteer or seek employment. It is almost impossible to find work when you have no address.
