Street Life North Tyneside plan to fund a series of children's mass participation events 2022 and 2023 as part of the global Kidical Mass movement building on the success of our first event in May 2022. Organising these events takes resources that we don't have to promote, insure and supervise the rides and ensure facilities and refreshments are in place at the end. Additional resources are needed to make sure that events are accessible to everyone cycling, wheeling or walking regardless of ability. Ice Cream and cake provision alone is a serious undertaking, sourced from local businesses.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Kidical Mass rides bring people together in a way that most of us don't get the chance to experience. Flowing through North Tyneside's streets and public spaces as a group of hundreds of kids, mums, dads, grandparents and well-wishers isn't something possible on an average day in car dominated North Tyneside. Participants get a chance to experience our outdoors in a different way, it puts a smile on peoples faces. Showing the wider public what our public spaces are capable of and who they might really be for offers a huge opportunity to transform our built environment. Kidical Mass is a global movement but the first event in North Tyneside held in May 2022 was a huge success attracting over 300 people. Like many movements that focus on young people’s place on our streets, one of the cornerstones of Kidical Mass’ is that children have a right to our streets – to move safely on them, to play on them, and to be increasingly independent on them.
Steps to get it done:
https://ntynesidelivingstreets.org.uk/2022/05/18/almost-300-north-tynesiders-join-our-first-ever-kidical-mass/ The first Kidical Mass ride was promoted and run by North Tyneside Living Streets local group. Going forward the group is setting up separately as Street Life North Tyneside and taking over responsibility from Autumn 2022 for promoting, insuring and organising. This currently operates as an unincorporated group.
