The idea

Stage Makers is a youth-led theatre programme in Worthing for ages 12–25, giving young people the chance to train in both performance and backstage roles.
Participants will learn acting, directing, lighting, sound, set design, and stage management with guidance from professional facilitators. The programme is designed to equip young people with valuable skills, confidence, and teamwork experience, while encouraging creativity and leadership.
Stage Makers hands over full ownership of the productions to its members. They’ll form both the acting company and the technical crew, working together to stage a winter showcase and a fully produced play. This unique approach not only builds theatre skills, but also develops problem-solving, communication, and organisational abilities that will benefit them for life.
By supporting this project, you’ll help us cover venue hire, set and prop materials, costumes, technical equipment, and marketing — creating opportunities both onstage and offstage.

What we'll deliver

  • Weekly workshops for ages 12–25 covering acting, directing, lighting, sound, set & props, and stage management
  • Training led by professional facilitators in both performance and backstage roles
  • A winter showcase entirely run by the Stage Makers company
  • A fully staged scripted production in a local theatre
  • Real-world technical experience with lighting desks, sound systems, and set builds
  • Opportunities for young people to take leadership roles and manage productions from concept to performance
  • Public events that bring the Worthing community together to celebrate youth creativity

Why it's a great idea

Stage Makers will give young people in Worthing access to high-quality theatre training that covers both creative and technical skills. Participants will gain hands-on experience in acting, directing, lighting, sound, set design, props, and stage management, learning directly from industry professionals.

By taking full ownership of productions, they’ll develop leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills — all of which are transferable to future careers both in and beyond the arts. The project will boost confidence, creativity, and resilience, while fostering a sense of pride and belonging in the local community.

The winter showcase and staged play will bring families, friends, and residents together, strengthening community connections and celebrating young talent. Supporters will see tangible results: empowered young people, a vibrant youth-led theatre scene, and increased access to the arts for all.

Steps to get it done

  • Stage the winter showcase, with participants taking full responsibility for acting and technical roles.
  • Deliver a fully staged play in a local theatre, run entirely by the Stage Makers company.
