Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

Spotlight Youth Centre is a world class facility being built in Poplar, East London. When it opens in Autumn 2013 it will house state of the art creative and media learning facilities and programmes, alongside a vast range of advice and support services. Spotlight will inspire local young people to develop skills, realise their potential and take their next steps into the world of work. The building is a result of genuine collaboration between young people, architects and service designers. The Radio Studio, at the heart of the building, has been planned following requests from literally hundreds of young people who can't wait to see the centre open and start broadcasting. Please help make their dreams come true!

What we'll deliver:

  • We will fit out one of the central spaces in the building as a Radio Studio.
  • Money raised through Spacehive will pay for soundproofing the walls, ceilings and floors.
  • Live performances can be broadcast via connections with the Centre's main auditorium and other creative spaces.
  • Young people will be able to take advantage of all facilities, including the Radio Room, for no or nominal cost.
  • If we are lucky enough to exceed our fundraising target money will also go towards the production booth itself.

Why it's a great idea:

Spotlight is being built in Poplar, one of the poorest areas in London, yet 10 minutes from the Olympic Park and Canary Wharf. Young people have told us they desperately want a place where they can take part in creative and learning activities, gain skills and confidence, get the advice and support they need and build a foundation for their future careers. They want a place that can link them to the opportunities the capital provides. Spotlight will provide that and is already demonstrating to local young people that they are valuable and valued. The Radio Studio is a vital addition that will broadcast young people's work from other spaces in the centre to the outside world via digital channels (Youtube, internet radio etc) and will give them the opportunity to learn skills such as presenting, radio production and sound engineering. Placing a Radio Studio at the heart of the Centre will enable more young people to be listened to. London should get ready to listen!

Steps to get it done:

  • After a herculean effort we have managed to raise enough money to cover the main building costs.
  • However there is still a shortfall in relation to the fit out of some of the rooms.
  • With your help we will be able to instruct our contractors to fit out the interior of the Radio Studio.
  • This will be in accordance with plans drawn up by our youth committee in collaboration with our architects.
  • Spotlight and the Radio Room will be fully operational in Autumn 2013
