The Dublin Sourdough Rotation is a volunteer-run urban food-sharing community that builds neighbourly connections through the making and sharing of bread.
After a successful pilot program in Stoneybatter in 2023, the Dublin Sourdough Rotation has since expanded into a number of areas across Dublin.
Our main focus is our monthly bread rotations, where local members are placed into pods of four people with whom they share bread with.
In 2025, we aim to deliver 5x sourdough workshops for new and existing bakers to help them develop their sourdough baking skills and build new connections within their community.
During the workshops, new members with no prior experience in using sourdough will be introduced to the skills needed to confidently bake healthy sourdough bread, while existing members will be introduced to new techniques to develop their skills in using sourdough.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Education
By attending and engaging in these workshops, participants will develop skills to confidently bake sourdough bread in their homes.
Community Engagement
By bringing new and existing members together in a learning and sharing environment, we can build stronger community connections and support members to feel more at home in their neighbourhoods.
Healthy Eating
Sourdough bread is a healthy alternative to often highly processed shop-bought bread. It has a lower glycemic index than most other breads, and as it is made from wild yeast and bacteria it’s much better for gut health.
Sustainability
By participating in the monthly sourdough rotation, members are actively engaging in a strong sharing culture. Increasing active participation in sharing practices, particularly food sharing has been proven to support the development of more resilient and sustainable communities.
Steps to get it done:
- Purchasing equipment and ingredients
- Finalising workshop delivery partners
- Planning the workshop delivery
- Communicating with participants
- Delivering workshops 1-5
- Capturing feedback from participants
The current rotation groups are based in D3/D5/D7/D8/D9/D15
