Crabapple Community is based at Berrington Hall just south of Shrewsbury. Its members live together in and share responsibility for a large Georgian house with 20 acres of wildlife-rich land.
As a constituted, not-for-profit organisation, Crabapple Community aims to:
-
Support its members in their efforts to live in sustainable, ethical and earth-conscious ways individually and as a community.
-
Inspire others and share skills in sustainable living, organic growing, regenerative cultures and managing land for biodiversity.
We seek to meet these aims in the following ways:
-
As a community we grow a lot of fruit and vegetables, create and maintain habitat for wildlife, manage our woodlands sustainably for firewood and timber, pool our resources and use regenerative systems and renewable resources as much as possible to meet our practical living needs. We make decisions collectively, use organic methods and draw inspiration from permaculture.
-
We hold weekly community gardening days which are open and free to the public, as well as open days, volunteer weekends and occasional art/music events. We also host events organised by groups with similar aims and values to us, and we offer residential volunteer placements, mainly through the "World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms” (WWOOF) scheme.
In 2025, Crabapple Community will be celebrating its 50th anniversary of supporting transformation towards a more just, peaceful and sustainable world. We invite you to help us continue this work – please check out our crowdfunder to support our latest project.
