The idea
The Singing Circle will take place in the junior section of Lancaster library. Each week an hour of group singing will be followed by refreshments and a space for people to chat. Sessions will run as free drops. We will learn songs by ear so there is no need for sheet music, the only thing you'll have in your hands is your baby or a biscuit.
The Music we sing together is specifically selected to be accessible and empowering for all attendees, regardless of their previous musical experience. It's all about the process of singing together, rather than polished performances. We emphasise singing for yourself and feeling good. Through this participants will see their child respond and engage with the music. Through these supportive and accessible sessions we aim to create a space where group singing allows for parents wellbeing to be championed.
What we'll deliver
- ten sessions over the course of ten weeks
- Money used to market the sessions via physical posters and flyers
- a website to promote the sessions and provide access to resources used in the sessions used in the sessions.
Why it's a great idea
Research into the effects of groups singing, specifically for new parents, points to many benefits. Singing is shown to have a positive affect on the symptoms of mother experiencing PND. Group singing can reduce cortisol levels amongst parents. These sessions have the potential to act as cathartic and therapeutic space where parents may find an inclusive social activity, practical ways to calm their babies, a sense of achievement and increased self-esteem, an activity that priorities their own needs and gives them some "me-time" and another way to communicate and connect with their child through song. With regular sessions and the bond-building act of group singing, a supportive sense of community will emerge, where peer to peer support and solidarity between parents may be practiced.
