The idea
I have been staying with the community Kinkeling Garden since 1998. Over the years I have been there many times and helped the project work towards substainable organic gardening. Currently, the garden is being used by 5 different families and is in need of some financial input to make it more viable. Help needed includes, fencing to keep out livestock and a borehole to provide water for irrigation. Past projects include tree planting which has seen mango, cashew and coconut seedlings mature into full grown fruit trees.
What we'll deliver
- investigate the best options for irrigation
- Fence the garden
- support gardeners with seeds and equipment
Why it's a great idea
Because, as a musician and drum workshop leader I take a lot of inspiration from my visits to The Gambia. The sense of community and connection created in a drum circle is wonderful and I think it's great for something to be given back to a culture which is rich in music and tradition but by our standards, poor in money and resources.
Steps to get it done
- by advertising for donations towards this
- by following up after the event to encourage further contributions from participants
- by holding an initial fundraising drum circle event
- by networking the event
The event itself will be the first part of more regular events and fundraising ideas. There is a long term vision for Kinkeling Garden project which will be set out on the webpage. The key areas of importance are: Sustainable agriculture, Supporting local artists and crafts people, and creating cross cultural exchange opportunities.
