Sharing people's history of West Lancs published their Delivery Report!3 months ago

Sharing facts, photos, stories and artefacts from the past about West Lancashire, in an easily accessible paper format.
We aim to produce a series of 2 short publications on various aspects of life and times in the West Lancashire area over the past 3 centuries, using our unique collection of material and resources. This will involve researching our subject, gathering together all the information we have and verifying the authenticity of the information. With the use of a desktop publisher programme this will then be formatted into a book of approximately 20 pages. The publications will be:- - Interesting to the general public - Historically accurate - Attractive and engaging - Enjoyable to read - Freely available

Why it's a great idea:
The inspiration behind this project is our need to share the wide range of material we hold in our library. At present it is seen by the relatively few people who visit. Although we are continually expanding our website, this is seen mainly by those members with digital skills, leaving a huge number of local people who can't access this material. In undertaking this project we will share images, stories and information of long ago in West Lancashire, keeping alive the history and heritage of the area. We, as a society, will benefit from new skills learned, increased publicity and improved profile and be doing something we are passionate about. The publications will help people identify more with their community and gain a sense of the of the importance of the area in previous centuries. A more civic minded population who will take pride in where they live and want to be more involved, resulting in economic benefits and profile. Our heritage is important and must be preserved.

We were delighted to be part of a very vibrant Ormskirk Gingerbread Festival yesterday with our stall beside the town's historic clocktower. Deputy Mayor Anne Fennell and Deputy Mayoress Sarah Lawton (pictured here) showed a keen interest in our display and were very pleased to be given a copy of Family History and The Lost Buildings of West Lancashire to peruse at a later date.

Family History and the Lost Buildings of West Lancashire will be launched in Ormskirk Library on Monday (10th June) at 11 am with a presentation outlining the project and talks about some of the buildings. From Monday copies of the booklet will be available free of charge from any West Lancashire library (Ormskirk, Skelmersdale, Parbold, Burscough or Tarleton). For those further afield booklets can be ordered (from Monday) via Parish Chest for the price of a stamp https://www.parishchest.com/ormskirk-district-fhs-3508.php and a digital version will be available to download from the ODFHS website (downloads section on the main menu) https://www.odfhs.website/index.php/downloads after the launch. We are delighted to have reached this milestone and thank everyone who has supported us. Work is now in progress on the second of our two booklets"Family History and the Landmarks of West Lancashire" due for publication in the Autumn.
We are delighted to announce that the first of two freely available publications funded by the Sharing People's History of West Lancashire crowdfunding project and Lancashire County Council will be launched on Monday 10th June 11 am at Ormskirk Library. There will be a video explaining the background to the project plus a series of short talks by members of the ODFHS publication group highlighting the family history connections to buildings featured in the book.
Our new display boards saw action for the first time at Ormskirk Library yesterday. We presented an exhibition of photographs and adverts from our archive at the very successful "Memory Collectors" event. The display depicted Ormskirk shops and businesses past and present and can be seen again at Ormskirk Parish Church next Saturday (23rd March 2024) between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Good news, the first publication funded by our Spacehive crowdfunding and Lancashire County Council is taking shape. We have been looking at historic buildings which are no longer part of today's landscape and considering how they influenced the lives of our ancestors. We hope this will help those researching their West Lancashire family roots.

A friendly, active & progressive family history society, based in Ormskirk, West Lancashire. We are a registered charity and been in existence for 43 years. The area we cover includes Ormskirk, Burscough, Lathom, Rufford, Hesketh with Becconsal, Tarleton, Westhead, Aughton, Lydiate, Halsall, Downholland, Haskayne, Melling, Bickerstaffe, Simonswood and Skelmersdale. The Society is run entirely by volunteers.
Currently with 150 members, we have two websites. The main being https://www.odfhs.website, with a second site specialising in boatfamilies, https://www.boatfamilies.website. We also have a YouTube channel - ODFHSSocialMedia, and a Facebook page - facebook.com/OrmskirkDistrictFamilySociety.
Our aim is to help and encourage people in researching their ancestors - not only who they were, but how they lived, what the area they lived in was like, what was their job etc. To this end we provide 3 magazines per year, monthly meetings, YouTube videos, Zoom chats, monthly e-newsletter, help desk at Ormskirk library, community events and much more.
Over the years we have collected, with community support a large amount of material about West Lancashire, which is housed in our library in Ormskirk and unavailable on commercial heritage websites.
Since the pandemic we have seen an increased membership from far and wide reflecting a growing interest in this subject area and an increased volume of material. We are all passionate about sharing this.
