More about our impact

The environment

By rewilding and adding native tree saplings then soil erosion will reduce. Plants will in previously bare soil will flourish both binding the soil structure and encouraging insect diversification.

The local economy

The increase in leisure walkers is reaching the the local pub and restaurant. Volunteers participated of refreshments after the working parties including entering a team at the weekly quiz.

Volunteering, jobs & education

The weekend working parties attracted several new volunteers to SWWG. In total 300 volunteer hours were recorded for this five month project. Funding was spent on materials supplied by local merchants.

Arts, culture & heritage

Guided nature walks have been planned to include the rich industrial heritage now hidden as land has returned to nature.

Activity, health and leisure

The path is now a valuable accessible route for walkers. Sandbach Walking Festival will use the path in summer 2023 and guided walks will be available throughout the year.

Sandbach Woodland and Wildlife Group formed in 2008 as a group of local volunteers who recognised the value of the town's woodland assets. It's aim is for the conservation of woodland and associated open areas in and around Sandbach maintaining its wildlife importance whilst ensuring the benefits of some access for the whole community.

Since 2008 working parties of volunteers have taken practical steps to restore and create a network of woodland paths for public access. Fundraising provides the materials to lay paths, install safety fencing and construct steps and even a bridge. Particular thanks go to Sandbach Town Council as our core funding providers.

A committee of SWWG members also organise ongoing maintenance and takes opportunities to enhance the local woodlands with native tree planting. Attempts are also made to control invasive plants which threaten to damage areas of our woodlands. Litter and waste are regularly removed by volunteers to help protect the threat to wildlife and maintain an attractive environment.

SWWG maintain close links with Sandbach Clean Team and Sandbach Footpath Group to help identify priority issues and contribute to Sandbach Town and Neighbourhood Plans.

As a volunteer group our resources and skills are limited so we use contractors for appropriate tasks. Cheshire East Council and Highways department will manage safety issues on their land. Care4CE, who provide occupational opportunites, have delivered several of the labour intensive projects required to extend the woodland path network.

Often working beside Arclid Brook the SWWG have adopted advice from the Canal and River Trust and Environment Agency to help deliver the projects safely.
