Our work has often been stagnated due to our difficulty in having a youth friendly space from which we can operate. Having our own space and tailoring it to our needs would mean that such problems are alleviated. Our dream of creating a youth club type space where young people can come to after school and feel safe but also inspired and encouraged to discuss some of the most important issues of the day through debate and dialogue would be able to come into fruition. We intend to launch our after school clubs in September which will involve young people leading workshops to support other youngsters in the area through arts and academia. Additionally, through this space we also want to create a space where young entrepreneurs who are partnered up with us can operate out of our space whether that is to create, plan or trade.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The heart of what we do is engaging young people in transformative dialogue. Creating a safe space where young people cant talk about some of the most important issues, so that there thinking can be fortified and elevated. we are living in times where increasingly people are not listening to each other, constructive dialogue is not being had and we want to change that. through the work we have done for the last two years 90% of our participants have said that our work has helped them think in a more open and understanding way. If we can expand our impact to more young people - who knows the astronomical impact that we can have on our generation and on our world. More now than ever our culture needs community. With schools facing cuts and limited resources to help young people in these so needed areas of life, we believe that we can be the change that is needed in our community.
Steps to get it done:
Our mentoring programme seeks to partner up young people from our area with older students who have been successful in their chosen careers and areas of study. We have been able to acquire mentors from top UK institutions such as Oxford,LSE, Kings College London and more who have come from similar backgrounds to many of the young people with whom we work. The ability for young people to work with top students will help realise aspiration in our mentees and help advance their schooling. In addition to all the work we do, we think that we are able to provide a holistic education and fortification for young people in our community.
About the space
For many of those involved in the work we do. This is our home. Where we were born and raised and where there is inordinate talent and potential. Greenwich, particularly Woolwich is beginning to see some big changes. On the cusp of gentrification, now more than ever it is important our young people have a stake in their community.
