More about our impact
The environment
Durham Wildlife Trust ensured that the contractors we relied on used all natural materials to produce a safe, environmentally conscious play area.
The local economy
The play area has already increased our visitor numbers and we expect a further increase in the following months as the school holidays approach. In turn, we will generate more funds for the onsite shop, coffee shop and increase our memberships, all of which contribute to the local economy and encourage individuals to engage with nature. We also relied on 6 local businesses to transform the area.
Activity, health and leisure
The play area encourages children and families to visit the nature reserve. Not only do the children play in the bespoke play area they also visit the rest of the nature reserve and engage with the wildlife within. The reserve is totally free to visit and we have a site based education team who run a wide variety of events. We also have schools arrange trips to come and see the reserve and the play area is a big draw for the schools, that in turn helps us to bring in income to support the education team.
