The idea

Through engaging with the Council we know it's not a Council asset, but its value to the community is recognised. The Council has thus offered to support by commissioning the design work needed to understand what a replacement could involve, cost, and what agreements are required. This collective effort is the 1st step; without it there is no route to progressing a replacement bridge
Our role is to raise the funding for the design. These funds will enable the Council to commission specialist design work and determine an estimated cost, creating the evidence needed to help the community, landowners, the Council and potential funders investigate the next steps
This campaign aims to raise enough funding to enable the Council to commission the design. Future decisions about construction, funding, ownership and ongoing maintenance will be considered separately once the design work is complete and implications are known
Costs are subject to slight changes following receipt of a formal quote

What we'll deliver

  • A design for the replacement of a pedestrian bridge.
  • A partnership between the community, Kirklees Council and local businesses and landowners.
  • The overall aim of the project is to eventually deliver a new pedestrian bridge over the River Colne in Slaithwaite.
  • Designed with durable materials to serve as a safe & attractive crossing point for walkers & daily commuters.

Why it's a great idea

Strengthens community bonds by fostering a shared sense of pride and belonging.

This is the necessary first step in replacing the bridge that will inform all next steps.

It will help Kirklees Council support the community-led partnership by providing the technical information needed to investigate future options, without committing the Council to fund construction or assume future maintenance responsibility at this stage.

If we can deliver on a replaced bridge it will provide a clear, tangible benefit to all, in turn promoting active travel and a more pleasant way to get into the village.

By enhancing local infrastructure, the project also supports nearby businesses, encouraging footfall and fostering economic growth.

This initiative represents a significant step in revitalising public spaces, promoting inclusivity, and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors in Slaithwaite.

Steps to get it done

  • Transfer the funding raised to Kirklees Council so the design works can be commissioned.
  • Commission the bridge design works.
  • Review the design options and estimated costs to understand what may be affordable and deliverable.
  • Further engagement with Kirklees Council and local landowners around next steps, informed by the results of the design.
