Back this project!

KALA Arts CIC is launching RE:Create Leicester, a pilot creative reuse hub where donated materials are transformed into art, skills and opportunities for young people and the wider community. We work with marginalised and global majority communities across Leicester, creating safe, inclusive spaces that support confidence, wellbeing and connection through creativity. Recreate will collect clean, usable surplus materials from local businesses and organisations and make them accessible for creative use. Alongside this, we will deliver free and low-cost workshops for young people, families and community groups. This project builds on strong demand from our community and partners and forms the first phase of a long-term reuse hub for Leicester. By starting with a pilot model, we will test, refine and grow a sustainable approach that combines environmental action with creative engagement.

What we'll deliver:

  • Divert at least 500kg of reusable materials from landfill
  • Set up a functional reuse hub with shelving and storage
  • Engage at least 150 local participants
  • Deliver 10 creative reuse workshops for young people
  • Provide 5 open access community reuse sessions

Why it's a great idea:

This project will benefit Leicester by addressing both environmental and social challenges. Young people—particularly those facing barriers—will gain access to free creative opportunities that improve confidence, mental health and social connection. Our work has already shown strong outcomes in reducing isolation and building skills. At the same time, RE:Create will reduce waste by diverting usable materials from landfill and giving them a second life through creativity. The project will also create a welcoming community space where people of different ages and backgrounds can come together, learn new skills and feel part of something positive. Local organisations and businesses will benefit from an ethical way to redistribute surplus materials, contributing to Leicester’s environmental goals. Overall, the project strengthens community wellbeing, supports young people and promotes a more circular, sustainable city.

Steps to get it done:

  • Set up the reuse hub space
  • Deliver pilot workshops for young people
  • Open community reuse sessions
  • Evaluate and plan next phase
