Preston Caribbean Carnival is an annual event held in Preston, Lancashire and attracts many visitors from throughout Lancashire as well as further afield from other Caribbean carnivals and festival goers.
It consists of a Caribbean style procession through urban streets followed by a family fun afternoon on Moor Park, Preston. Local and visiting children and young peoples dance troupes perform along the route along with salsa dancers, steelpan, samba drummers and newly created large piece carnival costumes. Dance troupes are very popular around the city offering weekly dance sessions throughout the year and a social group outside of school.
Live stage entertainment is arranged on the park where children’s activities including inflatables, reptiles, creepy crawlers, Caribbean and international foods and a bar facility entertain throughout the afternoon. Soundsystems provide additional music around the arena. Music is predominantly soca, reggae, salsa and calypso styles with the aim of producing a carnival that is reminiscent of carnivals that take place in the Caribbean. The charity believes that bringing art and culture to low engagement areas will help break down cultural differences making different cultures more acceptable to all.
