The idea
We will recruit and train volunteers to become the friendly voice on the telephone or, when possible, a supportive visitor. We want to provide a link to the outside world at a time when many residents are still locked inside due to the coronavirus. For some people there is no immediate prospect of a return to normal life, so our team will be available to any older person who would benefit, both now and in the weeks and months ahead. We will especially reach out to:
* Care Home Residents – we want to support the amazing work of care home staff by providing extra contact and companionship for residents whose daily lives have been upended by Coronavirus and who've not been able to see family or friends for many weeks.
* Bereaved Older People – working with St Richard’s Hospice we want to offer specialist support to those suffering personal loss at a terrible time.
Together we can bring some positivity and new friendships for everyone involved.
What we'll deliver
- 25 trained volunteers to provide a telephone befriending service
- 15 trained volunteers to offer home visits – with all necessary infection control
Why it's a great idea
This project will provide hugely valuable connection and companionship for those for whom the future might look dark and uncertain. Through this project Malvern Hills residents can know that other people in the community do care for their well-being. Together we will build bridges between local residents and help give people confidence to return to everyday life after Covid.
Steps to get it done
- Contact all Care Homes in Malvern Hills District with details of our new Reaching Out Service
- Conduct online training for specialist volunteers in bereavement support
- Link volunteers with individuals and Care Homes who will welcome their connection
