The environment

The project helped reduce its environmental impact by expanding digital broadcasting and online content, allowing audiences to access programmes remotely and reducing the need for printed materials and unnecessary travel. Shows were streamed live and made available on demand, increasing accessibility while using digital platforms to engage listeners. Radio2Funky also used its platform to promote local environmental initiatives, community events and campaigns delivered by partner organisations, helping to raise awareness of sustainability issues within the local community. Where possible, the project encouraged paperless communication, digital marketing and the reuse of existing equipment and resources, supporting more environmentally responsible working practices.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Achieved. Radio2Funky 95FM has created a platform for DJs and presenters to showcase their work and reach wider audiences. The station now supports over 30 DJs each week, with shows published online and generating more than 300,000 streams, significantly increasing exposure for local talent and promoting music and culture of Black origin. The expanded platform has also attracted more volunteers and new people interested in community radio, creating additional opportunities for skills development, broadcasting experience and community participation.

Arts, culture & heritage

The project strengthened Leicester's arts, culture and heritage by providing a dedicated platform for music, stories and creative expression rooted in Black culture. Through Radio2Funky 95FM, local DJs, presenters and artists were given opportunities to develop their skills, share their work and reach wider audiences. The project celebrated diverse musical genres and cultural heritage while increasing access to community broadcasting. It also attracted new volunteers and aspiring broadcasters, creating pathways into the creative industries and helping to build a more diverse and representative local arts sector. By combining live broadcasting, online content and community engagement, the project preserved and promoted local cultural voices, supported emerging talent and encouraged greater participation in Leicester's vibrant cultural landscape.

Activity, health and leisure

The project promoted leisure, wellbeing and community participation by providing free, accessible community radio that encouraged people to engage with local music, arts and culture. Listeners were able to enjoy live broadcasts, discover new artists and participate through interviews, competitions and social media interaction. Radio2Funky also worked with local healthcare organisations to raise awareness of health and wellbeing initiatives, share important public health messages and signpost listeners to local support services. This helped improve access to trusted information while encouraging healthier lifestyles and stronger community connections. In addition, the station recruited and trained new volunteers, presenters and DJs, providing opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence and connect with others. These activities supported social wellbeing, reduced isolation and created inclusive opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to take part in community life.
