'Adoption' of a landmark urban pylon and its surround for a public realm memorial to women's equality champion and electrical engineer Dame Caroline Haslett (1895-1957) at a site near her birthplace.
Phase 1 is an essential consultation stage. We need to find out whether our idea has the support and 'buy-in' of the wider community. We want to offer a process of discovery and involvement in planning and implementing a public realm arts, local historical and engineering heritage, landscape and townscape conservation and enhancement scheme. A consultation stage will involve neighbourhood leafletting, notice board posters, drop-in presentation events, slide shows and preparation of on-line media material and questionnaires. Initially, therefore, we are seeking funding for hard copy printing of consultation documents and leaflets, and for pop-up display stands and roller banners.

Why it's a great idea:
A combination of circumstances calls for a fresh look at raising the profile of one of the most illustrious of Sussex women – and especially from the place that developed as Crawley in the 20th century: 1. There is a WSCC Highways site, unused except for an electricity pylon, at a key public realm and ‘gateway’ location in Three Bridges and Crawley. 2. The birthplace and childhood home of Caroline Haslett is very nearby. 3. The closure of the Three Bridges branches of Lloyds and Barclays banks foreshadow a degree of change to the locality, in which we want to play a part in setting the scene. 4. The site relates visually and functionally to currently proposed Three Bridges Station access alterations. 5. Urban design enhancements and place-making opportunities are complementary to a current request to extend Conservation Area status to the pre new town ‘village’ of Three Bridges. 6. The view of tower itself is inescapable. Let's make it work for us. A test illumination was great!

THREE BIDGES FORUM was initiated in 2009, building on pre-existing community networks, to promote communication between residents, businesses, local authorities and other stakeholders. The Forum’s terms of reference focus on plans for safeguarding environmental, amenity and heritage values.
The Forum is open to anyone living or working in Three Bridges. Our Steering Committee arranges at least two ‘Full Forum’ meetings per year, inviting speakers and open discussion on matters of concern with CBC Three Bridges Ward and WSCC Division Members present.

Plans for 2018 include the initiation of a major public realm project to commemorate the Three Bridges birthplace of nationally acclaimed Electrical Engineer Caroline Haslett and her contribution to the C20 women’s equality movement.
The current Forum membership likes to meet face to face in the old fashioned way, but hopes to attract younger and web-savvy people interested in updating the way we communicate Forum news and objectives.
