The idea
Powells Primary School currently has a very old pond which has been blocked off for the last 15 years. By reinstating it, the school community and general public will be able to learn more about ecology and silviculture, as well as wildlife being able to access the pond, encouraging diverse vegetation to grow in harmony with the woodland. Situated on the school site, the pond will need to be safe and secure by building a new perimeter fence, installing a buoyancy aid and developing a health and safety policy. It will provide an outdoor learning space for pupils and teachers to support their mental health and wellbeing; particularly where a different environment to a classroom setting is needed. The project will also address specific research questions; studying sustainability and environmental management as well as direct conservation of the countryside. Positioned in a rural Cirencester area, it will allow the study of its' evolution for pupils and the public for years to come.
What we'll deliver
- Reinstate the pond - digging down, new lining
- Securing the pond - perimeter fence and bouyancy aid
- Planting - to encourage natural diversity, restore natural habitats
- Incorporating it into the school curriculum
- Opening it up to the community for local projects to benefit from
Why it's a great idea
The Powells Pond project will hugely benefit both the school community and beyond. By enhancing the natural environment and diversifying curriculum learning, this would positively impact the mental health and well-being of all pupils and staff. By providing a tranquil outdoor learning space this will particularly support those with Special Educational Needs during their learning. We have partnered with local organisations on the project - for example working with Cirencester Science and Technology Society to increase awareness of ecology and silviculture and support initiatives of the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, in helping restore natural habitats and encouraging plant diversity. The site will not only provide richness to school learning and improve the overall school experience of each child, but provide a bio-diverse natural site for the wider Cirencester community and the Gloucestershire region for a wide range of local groups and community organisations to visit and enjoy.
