Newham Music will build a pop-up music studio in Westfield Stratford City which will provide local emerging artists with the opportunity to work with music professionals to create original music.
Newham Music will work with Westfield Stratford City to house a pop-up music production studio for members of the local communities to use, free of cost, exploring their talents and collaborating with other musicians to produce high-quality tracks and recordings. We will kit-out the studio with professional-grade equipment and enlist industry professionals to work one on one with emerging community musicians, particularly attracting the young people who congregate in the surrounding areas, including outside Stratford Underground Station and in the Stratford Centre shopping complex. Newham Music will promote the project and share the tracks that have been created throughout the project across all of our channels, making them available to all participants. Our partnership with Westfield will include showcasing and staging opportunities through their Westfield Presents... programme.

Why it's a great idea:
This project will bring a new and exciting creative opportunity for the busy Westfield Stratford shopping centre. While we aim to especially support emerging young artists, there will be no age limit to participation and we will offer accessible, adaptable activities for all abilities The most frequent request Newham Music receives from young people is to provide a designated space to create, record, and distribute their music. This space will not only serve that purpose but will attract new audiences and signpost them to continued further engagement opportunities, encouraging long-term change and sustainable positive outcomes in the area. This first step in a new partnership with Westfield will build a foundation on which Newham Music can continue to offer high-profile performance opportunities for the children and young people of the borough, raising their aspirations and paving pathways into further education and employment.

Wow! It's been an incredible year since we started this crowdfunding campaign to say the very least. We are so lucky to have the support of our community behind us - even in these extremely uncertain times we have managed to create an amazing space for young people to come and create music that means something to them. Words can't express how grateful we are to be able to offer these opportunities which are more important than ever right now. If you find yourself in and around Stratford in the next few weeks, feel free to drop in and visit us - just make sure you're wearing your mask! :)

Newham Music is a regional leader in music education, providing whole-class tuition, individual lessons, and 70+ special projects and events to over 15,000 children and young people each year.
Newham Music regularly partners with surrounding cultural organisations to create innovative and exciting opportunities for the young people of Newham. In addition to strong relationships in many local schools, other frequent partners include the London Symphony Orchestra, Music and the Deaf, Drake Music, Urban Development, the Guildhall School, Spitalfields Music, Stratford Circus Arts Centre, and the Barbican as well as many others. Our team of highly-qualified teacher musicians include talented performers, well-trained studio professionals, and specialists in areas like music technology, songwriting, early years, SEN/D music, and pedagogy.
Our long-running Studio Sessions programme promotes accessible, life-affirming engagement with music for young people, providing progression routes into the creative industries offering skills development in music digital technologies, music in social media, music production and DJing through to learning to play with others, song composition, in bands and performance, all based in neighbourhood community centres. We currently run the programme in three centres across Newham and run weekly evening sessions that offer young people who may otherwise be disengaged in positive opportunities the chance to create art that represents them and their daily lives.
