More about our impact
The environment
The original project was intended to work in schools, however schools at the time of recruitment were under enormous finanical pressure and were unable to take up the opportunity, so we took the project on the road. During the Planet Plastic project we worked with over 500 children at Festivals and Community Events, such as Pride, The Rotary Carnival, Sompting Big Local Fun Day, and the Green Dreams Festival. We worked with a recycling educator and all the children took part in crafting activities to contirbute towards giant lanterns, and we spent time with each child talking about recycling and how our behaviour impacts on the planet. Each child and their adult were given a recycling leaflet and sticker for their home recycling. All our crafting activities used items that would have gone to landfill like plastic bottles, intercepted waste such as cups, paper, and plastic pots.
The local economy
In 2019 the festival itself was hit by a Gale force Storm that meant a lot of the outdoor activities did not take place, however the festival went ahead in an indoor venue, and the project saw the employment of over 8 contractors, including stage and lighting, security, musicians, and ambulance services. It also provided revenue for Worthing Theatres and Museums. Despite the foul weather over 1000 people came to the Assembly Halls to take part in the event. The project only employs local people and the total cost of the project which was money going back into the local economy was over £10,000
Volunteering, jobs & education
This project had a team of over 100 volunteers, all local to Worthing and the roles they had included, marshalling, crafting, social media, marketing, photography, performing, trustees, secretary and treasurer.
Arts, culture & heritage
The project resulted in the a high quality free festival which included the exhibition of 8 giant lanterns built in collaboration with community groups, and children at the festivals we attended. These were built with the support of the New Carnival Company, showcasing incredible lanterns made out of recycled materials.
Activity, health and leisure
We worked with Superstar Arts, Sight Support Worthing, YMCA, and others to make the event more accessible for people who would not usually be able to take part. Unfortunately due to the storm we were unable to proceed with our 5k run, and this was rescheduled for mid March 2020, so again was cancelled due to the Pandemic.
