Malpas Alport Primary School is a one and a half form entry school serving children from 2 to 11 years old. Our school serves the community of Malpas and surrounding areas and has 280 children on roll. Despite being in the centre of a farming community we have no field and limited spaces to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. We are, however, passionate about the environment and the children in the school council and eco-council have focused their aims to develop the school grounds, so they can grow and learn more about the natural world; specifically about biodiversity and sustainability. We also have numerous community partnerships, which support these ambitions, such as a strong connection with Prospect House the local care home; are working with the Malpas Amateur Gardeners society; and we have a community agreement in place to allow the 1st Malpas Scout Group and Squirrel Drey section to use the school grounds too. We are already working with Mintopia - a horticulture in education organisation - that centres its work on 'growing for wellbeing', and eco-literacy. Collectively, our network spans the community and includes a broad demographic of ages, the school has very much become a hub for interest in gardening and maintaining biodiversity, yet ironically lacks the resource infastructure currently to provide areas to grow for these multiple community groups. Space is also fairly limited so vertical planters as living walls, and other innovative growing capacities, would increase our capablility to support community endeavours and community building; which would in turn afford opportunities for sharing, story-telling and memory-making.
