The idea
A free Our Big Gig event at Woking Park on Sunday 19th July 2015, bringing families and the local community together to enjoy live music performances.
Phoenix Cultural Centre has been growing as a cultural hub for Woking over the last 6 years, providing music in the community, a venue for original music, as well as a performance and development centre for new local musicians. Once again this year, we have teamed up with Our Big Gig to host a dedicated event in Woking Park, centred around the Bandstand as a main stage with acoustic performers and buskers at other locations on site.
What we'll deliver
- Deliver an Our Big Gig event in Woking Park
- Organise food and beverage suppliers
- Programme 8 hours of performances featuring local and original musicians and Dj’s from a first gig to professional level
- Provide space for local art and craft groups and community and wellbeing groups to give out information
- Broadcast on Radio Woking
- Have space and instruments for people to participate in making music and ‘give it a go’ sessions
- Provide a tent holding a free songwriting workshop
Why it's a great idea
Since 2013 nearly 400,000 people have attended over 500 Our Big Gig events which have seen a wide variety of musical activities take place in a range of community spaces. Phoenix Cultural Centre has been part of this national initiative since running the Bandstand Marathon in 2012 the national event to close the Paralympic games which preceded Our Big Gig.
Phoenix Cultural Centre is a Community Interest group run entirely by local volunteers including experienced musicians as well as people from business and the Public Sector, who share a passion for original music performance and bringing wellbeing to the community through music activities.
Phoenix Cultural Centre aims to provide a centre for Woking which stages live music and arts events and has space for Community groups to use. A ‘safe space’ where people can experience different types of music and cultural activities alongside space for those who need rooms for workshops, events and support/advice activities.
