More about our impact

More about our impact

The environment

The environment

The virtual tour enables people to access all our Heritage Centre facilities without having to travel. Although a visit in person is always best, our virtual tour is of such a quality that we can reach further with less environmental impact. It is the same for our learning resources and schools access.

The local economy

The local economy

Stoke Mandeville is the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement and the local economy has welcome a facility that celebrates this heritage. We have attracted visitors from across the globe, who then stay at local hotels and eat at local pubs.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering, jobs & education

We have increased our volunteers from 5 to nearly 30, having facilities and resources has attracted a diverse range of wonderful supporters to help share this wonderful heritage.

Arts, culture & heritage

Arts, culture & heritage

Despite being the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement there was nothing available to view at Stoke Mandeville Stadium except for a portrait of the founding father Professor Sir Ludwig Guttmann. We now have a wonderful facility with fabulous learning resources used not just locally but nationwide and worldwide. In addition we have saved over 45 personal collections from being lost, many relating to local families. Our relationship with local schools including Mandeville School and several Special Needs Schools is growing, with nearly 900 pupils signed up to participate in our next event.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

We have regular local visitors who come regularly, alongside visiting groups from general tourists to schools and universities. University students have come from all over the UK and the world, including France, Canada, Uzbekistan, Italy, Tokyo and Australia. Our research shows that the displays are inspirational for both people with or without disabilities. We have exceeded our volunteer target and know the value to them in terms of their social wellbeing and mental health. We have a high level of volunteers and young people on work experience with disabilities.
