0 Feedback from an unknown visitor The highlight of my year – Oving Scarecrow Day, the best (all Free) event I’ve been to – the whole village takes part, with a scarecrow competition in the surrounding homes and so many events spread around the village... Steel band, tractor rides, archery, classic cars, ferret racing and a music festival at the pub (Gribble Inn) so many food & craft stalls to name a few. The icing on the cake for me was winning first price in the raffle – a massive scarecrow cake!’ delivered

More about our impact
The environment
We ask that people make their scarecrows out of items that can be recycled, so at the end of the day, it can be dismantled and either used again or put in the re-cycling bin. Refreshments are served on china plates and cups which are washed, dried and re-used. WSCC WasteBusters came with their scarecrow made out of items normally put in the recycling bins and they ran a stall informing people about recycling and re-use.
The local economy
Local crafts people held stalls in the village Hall and sold their goods. The dance troop, Zumba instructor, Morris dancers, choir, Sussex Saddleback pigs, Bognor Archery club and Croquet club all attended and by being there attracted new members to their various organisations.
Volunteering, jobs & education
Oving Scarecrow Day happens on just one day per year, we invite local organisations to take a stall, which costs them nothing, and man it or run an activity. This enables them to meet and greet people and tell them about their work. In 2019 we asked a number of organisations including, Home-Start, Chichester and District, various singing and dancing groups, Chichester Croquet Club, the Youth Club, Bognor Regis Archery Club, First Responders, Sussex Saddleback pig group, Zumba sessions.
Arts, culture & heritage
In addition to residents' scarecrows arranged around the village, we had a guest scarecrow area to enable people from outside the village to take part. This was popular and families enjoyed making their creations. A professional theatre group came for the day and were very popular as their show was all about climate change. We had a variety of music styles with Sussex Steel Band and the Sundays choir. Dancing displays were provided by the Arabesque School of Dance, Fishbourne Mills Morris dancing and Zumba. Tractor and trailer rides were provided by the Woodhornn Group who farm locally and can tell attendees about their crops, etc., local history walks were provided by our resident historian. A local woodcarver and Bodgers came to show their skills through the ages. Local Spinners came to show how to make a fleece into yarn.
Activity, health and leisure
We had very good feedback on the day. Many people thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors, enjoying the music and dancing, taking part in Zumba, walking round village looking at the scarecrows in the company of others and looking at everything that was on offer. Visitors took part in Archery, History tour and Croquet
