We urgently need to make a room in a wonderful listed building a safe & welcoming space for community groups to access learning opportunities.
Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.
We are delighted to be entrusted with the care of this amazing building that started life in 1881 as a Fire Station. We have recently ensured that the building is water tight to the elements, has full access across 4 floors and saved some important architectural and heritage features. We are committed to opening the building for more hours a day and to developing our community projects. Our education and learning programme will offer opportunities for local people to be more involved in the arts, heritage and learning. In order to help us deliver these services we need to complete the make over of a room that we just ran out of cash to complete. Restoring a Victorian building is not easy or cheap. We ran into issues with asbestos that had been left behind by less careful caretakers of the space and a result our programme over spent by £25,000 We want to complete the next stage of the restoration by making a safe space for community project work
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
1. Broadening access to, and more use of, existing services The project will broaden access to the existing services of the South London Theatre by allowing full participation in the activities of the building by people who have disabilities, including wheelchair users and those with visual or mobility impairment. 2. Creating a greater number and wider range of new services The project will create a space for new services for parts of the community that are not currently served, these will include classes for local pensioners, a venue for talks and educational programmes; space for meetings for local groups 3. Improving opportunities for the community to access a wide range of learning The project will allow greater access to learning by providing a base for the South London Theatre's youth training programme, a space for the theatre's adult training in theatre skills
Steps to get it done:
We love the building and want to ensure more people can use the space and fall in love with it too; http://www.southlondontheatre.co.uk/support/
