The Notebenders provides a safe environment for underrepresented musicians from diverse communities to learn, practice and showcase their musical talents. We plan to open up more opportunities.
The band provides a safe place for musicians from diverse communities and age groups to attend, share and play in a big band. Situated in a neighbourhood recognised by the local authority and Government as a severely deprived ares of the City - the band has extended their support to people in distress, low esteem and confidence, poor mental health and unemployed to experience the release through playing in a bid band. We offer a family atmosphere, sharing of spaces where participants can find solace through friendships, love of music, learning and playing in a bid band. We also offer young musicians from deprived areas and low income families with small contributions and assistance with purchasing basic instruments, tuition and mentoring. We practice every Friday at Ladywood Leisure Centre and have access to graduate musicians from the Birmingham Conservatoire that support, conduct the band and assist with writing new scores for the band.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The Notebenders is the legacy of the late great musician Any Hamilton MBE who inspired the community band. The beneficiaries of the project will be current and new members of the band and wider community that access our learning and teaching services. Participants from diverse communities and less privileged environments, community groups and individuals would benefit from their access to the band practices, showcasing individual and collective skills. Based in Ladywood Birmingham, the area is recognised as a 'deprived ward, with high unemployment, ill health, crime and distress'. People living in such dire situations and with on going high living costs need a positive outlet, access to moments of relief through music offered within the project. Each person is welcomed and offered a safe place, to share and bond with others from not so dissimilar situations providing solace, a place to unwind, share experiences with like minded people and offer support through human contact.
