We are a BIFA and IMDB qualifying festival. We create opportunity through participation. The festival is comprised of free workshops and courses, which are a good start for those interested in the creative sector to understand the mechanics of the industry. We host 3 days of Official Selection Screenings of feature and short films, local, national and international works, live Filmmaker Q&A's, Networking Events, Special Screenings and a Closing Awards Gala. We offer paid Internships/Placements and volunteer opportunities in which individuals are taught many practical skills they would not otherwise have the opportunity, such as cinema projection, festival management, programming etc. It is delivered through 10 different venue partners, most of which are community, charitable or educational organisations (such as Northumbria University and Newcastle University), in and around Newcastle and North Tyneside. We offer up 19 different programming strands for inclusivity and diversity

What we'll deliver:

  • Plant at least 50 trees
  • Deliver at least 4 workshops
  • Deliver a week-long documentary filmmaking course
  • Screen at least 100 films across various venue partners
  • Host at least 2 networking events
  • All films screened with the option of closed captions or subtitles
  • All venues and events to be completely accessible
  • Free screening passes to all selected Filmmakers and people aged 18 and under
  • Networking opportunities
  • Education and learning opportunities

Why it's a great idea:

Promoting a more diverse and independent visual arts and culture in under-represented areas in NE. We will offer local community the opportunity to view new and diverse works they would not otherwise have access to. The NEIFF operates a pay as you can method and also free passes so that we are able to encourage attendance from those of a lower socio-economic background and we offer free passes to those 18 years and under to encourage this demographic to independent cinema. We choose to include short films, this is to also benefit and encourage individuals with disabilities or neurodivergency as they may be more comfortable watching something in smaller segments and not sitting for prolonged periods. We will facilitate some relaxed screenings. All of our screenings have the option of closed captions or subtitles. We bring together audiences from varied backgrounds due to our diverse programme of screenings (film submission categories include general but also more specific strands)

Steps to get it done:

  • Delivery of NEIFF 2024 from 18/11/24 - 25/11/24

The NEIFF is the only regional festival working in collaboration with various local Universities, Colleges, Charities and Community Groups. We are the first of many inclusive initiatives and have received many awards and accolades for our work in this area. We are the only festival in the region to offer free, practical skills training and have so far supported over 400 people in this area. We were the youngest ever festival to obtain BIFA qualifying status, which is testament to the quality of the programme of screenings we deliver. For every ticket sold, one tree is planted, which makes us a carbon negative organisation. Our diverse and inclusive ethos is reflected in our team of volunteers. The NEIFF offers our audience the chance to connect with the Filmmakers through in-person Q&A's and we offer industry-interested individuals networking opportunities and masterclasses. All of our venues are chosen with accessibility at the forefront. We also offer local first-time filmmakers cash
