We are the Parish of Llansamlet and are shortly undertaking a large rejuvenation project with the Church building but wanted to do something with our 7 acre graveyard as well and link up more with our local community.
We have thus come up with the idea of a Community Garden based in the graveyard and run by ourselves in partnership with Shine Cymru who work with young adults with learning difficuties. Our loca Allotment in Frederick place have also agreed to help with stting up the project.
We will establish a fence/hedge between the garden and the new gravyard for privacy purposes before installing a timber shed for tools and equipment. We will then install a small poly tunnel for vegetable and flower seedlings and and prepare the ground outside to receive the seedlings when sufficiently grown.
The vegetable produce from the garden will be given to the local food bank and the flowers will be used in the various new planters that we will install around the graveyard as well as providing flowers for the Church itself on a regular basis.
All in all a project that everyone is a winner with as it will provide better community engagement for many, improved well being for many and a project that will make the large graveyard far more bio-diverse when we add the bird boxes, insect hotels , wild meadow flowers and other things we plan to do.
