The idea
The Mirfield Piano Walk is a community-driven cultural event that transforms the town into a vibrant musical trail. Over the course of a single day, audiences will stroll through Mirfield, encountering live piano performances in unexpected venues. The event blends professional and amateur talent, showcasing Grade 6–8 piano students alongside acclaimed pianists creating a rich tapestry of musical expression.
This project aims to make classical music more accessible for people who otherwise must visit concert halls outside the town. The walk is informal, and joyful. By placing performances in everyday spaces, we invite people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with music in a fresh, unpretentious way.
The difference this project will make is twofold: culturally, it will foster appreciation for live classical music and elevate Mirfield’s artistic identity; socially, it also will strengthen community ties by involving local businesses, volunteers, and audiences in a shared experience.
What we'll deliver
- A free musical discovery walk through Mirfield
- A mix of great amateur and professional pianists
- See places and buildings where you have never been before
Why it's a great idea
The Mirfield Piano Walk is for the residents of Mirfield and surrounding areas with a limited access to live classical music. Our aim is to engage a broad cross-section of the community — families, older residents, young musicians, local business owners, and visitors. We’re especially focused on:
• Local piano students, who will gain performance experience and confidence, amateur musicians, who rarely have public platforms and conservatory students who wants to get performance experience.
• Audiences who may not typically attend formal concerts, including those with mobility challenges or limited cultural access
• Local businesses, who will benefit from increased foot traffic and visibility
• Volunteers and community groups, who will help shape and deliver the event
In short, the Mirfield Piano Walk is designed to be multi-sensory, welcoming, and transformative — whether someone comes for the virtuosity, the community spirit, or simply the joy of discovering music in unexpected places.
