Ashington Cricket Club want to expand or changing rooms and repair our kitchen. During the Covid pandemic the club offered the clubhouse to the NHS as a vaccine centre ensuring the local community could be immunised. This left the club homeless for a season and no revenue could be accumulated as our bar was closed. Added to this the heavy traffic the clubhouse witnessed during this period means several areas of the clubhouse now require repair works, with little monies to do these. In Covid our junior members 'Mighty Acorns' decreased by approximately 60% in what the league clubs are calling the 'Covid Gap'. We hope to expand the changing rooms to accommodate more players (especially our girls and womens team having their own space) creating more opportunities to play cricket. The kitchen improvements will allow for food to be served at junior training which we hope will increase attendance and members, especially the junior section which we see as the long term lifeblood of the club
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
It is hoped in improving the kitchen and creating a more comfortable and welcoming environment the wider community will benefit from the extended service this will provide. The hall is hired for private/business functions free of charge whereby the users can reap the benefit of the facilities. The British Legion use the clubhouse as their local office so these improvements will support their organisation as well as other end users such as slimming world who offer great health advice and mental health sessions that are also ran from the clubhouse. We hope this will also attract other community groups and if we can secure these improvements there is a creche interested in using the clubhouse space. The changing room expansion will benefit playing club members but more so the females and juniors in creating their own safe space to change and keep belongings. At present they are almost uninhabitable and by creating a more welcoming environment we hope to increase our junior players.
Steps to get it done:
Ashington Cricket Club is home to England cricket internationals Stephen Harmison and Mark Wood. Mark has won the ICC world cup, ICC T20 world cup and the ashes, he is currently considered the fastest bowler in the world. Stephen was one ranked number one bowler in the world and is a double ashes winner, as well as winning the county championship with Durham. The club hope with the two players backing to try and use these achievements as inspiration to attract junior members back to the game and ensure the future of our club through grass root investment. By increasing junior members it will increase the number of volunteers required in the club as well as opportunities for members to become coaches from which careers can be formed through the Northumberland Cricket board which some of our members have become employed by in the past. An increase in junior members will also increase foot fall in the town centre on match days increasing spend in the local economy.
